Understanding your tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of sound, such as ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming, without an outside source. It’s very common, and it’s often linked to hearing loss, noise exposure or stress. For many people it’s mild. For others it disrupts sleep and concentration.

The first step is a proper evaluation. We measure your hearing and characterise the tinnitus itself, then explain what we found and which management options are likely to help most.

Your evaluation

Tinnitus testing near you in Viman Nagar

A tinnitus evaluation is a hearing test with tinnitus testing added, because tinnitus so often comes with hearing loss. A visit usually includes:

  • A conversation about your tinnitus: when it started, what it sounds like, whether it’s in one ear or both, and how it affects your sleep, work and mood.
  • An ear examination with video otoscopy.
  • A hearing test: pure tone audiometry, often with speech audiometry, and tympanometry if the middle ear needs checking.
  • Pitch and loudness matching, which describes your tinnitus in measurable terms so it can be tracked over time.
  • A plan, explained in plain language, with the options that suit you.

If you also feel dizzy or unsteady, an ear balance test can check the balance side of the inner ear too. If loud noise at work or play may be part of the story, read our guide to noise-induced hearing loss. Tinnitus testing is for adults and children old enough to describe what they hear. For babies, hearing is checked differently, with an OAE test as part of newborn screening.

Evaluation and management

How we assess and treat tinnitus

Pitch and loudness matching

We measure the pitch and loudness of your tinnitus so it can be characterised and tracked. It’s the foundation of a tailored plan.

Sound therapy and masking

Carefully chosen sounds and masker habituation techniques help your brain pay less attention to the tinnitus over time.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)

A structured combination of counselling and sound therapy designed to reduce the distress tinnitus causes and help you get used to it.

Hearing aids for tinnitus

When tinnitus comes with hearing loss, modern hearing aids, many with built-in tinnitus features, can help you notice it less.

A guide to hearing aids and tinnitus

Hearing aids and tinnitus: how they can help

This is a general guide. Whether a hearing aid would help you depends on your own hearing test and tinnitus, so it’s a decision to make with your audiologist.

How hearing aids help with tinnitus

When hearing fades, the brain receives less sound from the ear and can turn up its own background activity, which many people hear as tinnitus. A hearing aid brings back the everyday sounds you’ve been missing, so the tinnitus has less silence to stand out against. Many models also have a built-in sound generator, sometimes called a tinnitus masker, that plays a soft, adjustable sound to take the edge off the ringing. It doesn’t remove tinnitus, but many people find they notice it less.

Who hearing aids for tinnitus suit

They’re most often recommended when tinnitus comes with a hearing loss, even a mild one you hadn’t noticed. If your hearing is normal, sound therapy and counselling may suit you better, and we’ll tell you so.

Is there a best hearing aid for tinnitus?

People often look for the best hearing aids for tinnitus, but there isn’t a single best brand or model. As an authorised centre for Signia, Phonak, ReSound, Widex, Oticon and Audio Service, we can compare models with tinnitus features across brands rather than steer you to one. What matters is the fit for you: your hearing and tinnitus, a style you’ll wear comfortably all day, how easily you can adjust the relief sound, and extras such as an app or rechargeable batteries. A free home trial lets you judge it in your own life before you decide.

What a hearing aid for tinnitus costs

The cost depends on choices made with you after your evaluation:

  • Technology level, from essential to premium. Higher levels handle noise and changing surroundings better and offer more tinnitus options.
  • Style: behind-the-ear, receiver-in-canal or a custom in-ear model.
  • Features such as a tinnitus sound generator, rechargeable batteries or Bluetooth streaming.
  • One ear or two, depending on your hearing test.

The same goes for the tinnitus masker hearing aid price: the masker is a feature inside the hearing aid, so its cost depends on the hearing aid it’s part of. After your evaluation, we show you suitable options at different price points and explain the differences. If you buy a hearing aid from us, your consultation, audiometry and video otoscopy are included free, along with the trial, fitting and fine-tuning.

See a doctor or ENT specialist promptly if

  • The tinnitus is in one ear only, or it pulses in time with your heartbeat.
  • It started suddenly, together with a drop in hearing.
  • It comes with dizziness or vertigo, ear pain or discharge, or followed a head injury.
  • It’s affecting your mood or sleep so much that you feel low, anxious or hopeless.

These need a medical opinion, not just a hearing test. If your hearing dropped at the same time, or your ear suddenly sounds muffled, see a doctor today. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a doctor or go to a hospital emergency department straight away.

Questions

Tinnitus FAQs

Can tinnitus be cured?
There isn’t a single cure that works for everyone, but tinnitus can very often be managed. With the right combination of evaluation, sound therapy, counselling and, where needed, hearing aids, many people find it fades into the background and bothers them far less.
Is tinnitus linked to hearing loss?
Frequently, yes. That’s why we always assess your hearing as part of a tinnitus evaluation. Treating an underlying hearing loss often helps with the tinnitus too.
Should I be worried about tinnitus?
Tinnitus is usually not dangerous, but new, one-sided or pulsing tinnitus should be checked by a doctor. An evaluation gives you clarity and peace of mind, and a plan to feel better.
What is the relationship between tinnitus and mental health?
They often affect each other. Tinnitus can disturb sleep and concentration and lead to stress, anxiety or low mood, and stress and poor sleep can make tinnitus seem louder and harder to ignore. Counselling, as in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, and sound therapy aim to reduce the distress as well as the sound. If tinnitus is making you feel low or anxious, tell us and your doctor.
How long does it take to get used to tinnitus?
There’s no fixed timeline. Getting used to tinnitus, which audiologists call habituation, is gradual and differs from person to person. Many people find it bothers them less as time goes on, especially with sound therapy, counselling and, where there’s hearing loss, hearing aids. We review your progress at follow-up visits and adjust the plan.
What is the new tinnitus treatment in 2026?
You may read about new devices, apps and treatments for tinnitus, and research is active, but so far none cures tinnitus for everyone. The established ways to manage it remain a proper evaluation, sound therapy, counselling such as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, and hearing aids where there’s hearing loss. Be cautious of any product that promises a cure. If you’ve read about a new treatment, bring it to your evaluation and we’ll talk it through honestly.
