Hearing Getting Worse with Age? A Guide to Hearing Aids for Seniors
The TV creeps louder, everyone seems to mumble, and family gatherings become hard work. Hearing loss with age comes on so gradually that the family often notices before you do. It’s very common, and a lot can be done about it. Here’s what it is, the test that measures it, and how to choose hearing aids for seniors, including what decides the price.
Sound familiar?
How hearing loss with age often shows itself
- “My family says the TV is too loud, but any lower and I can’t follow it.”
- “I can hear people talking, but not the words, especially my grandchildren.”
- “At weddings and family functions, I’ve started sitting quietly instead of joining in.”
- “I keep asking my wife to repeat herself, and we’re both tired of it.”
- “My father says his hearing is fine, but he’s stopped answering the phone.”
None of these proves a hearing loss on its own. Together, they’re a good reason for a hearing test, whether it’s for you or for a parent.
What’s happening
What age-related hearing loss is
Doctors call it presbycusis. Over the years, the tiny sensory hair cells in the inner ear, and the nerve pathways that carry sound to the brain, slowly wear. The change is gradual, it usually affects both ears in a similar way, and it is permanent.
It usually starts with the higher pitches. These carry the crisp consonants of speech, like s, f, t and th, while the vowels that make a voice sound loud sit lower and last longer. So speech still sounds loud enough, but unclear. That’s why everyone seems to mumble, why women’s and children’s voices fade first, and why noisy places are where the problem shows most.
Years of loud noise, family history, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and some medicines can all add to it. And not every change in later life is age-related: earwax builds up more easily as we get older, which is why the answer is a proper test, not a guess.
Why it’s worth acting on
Because the change is slow, many people adapt without noticing and wait years. Meanwhile, listening takes more effort, conversation becomes tiring, and it’s easy to drift away from family talk. Hearing the doorbell, alarms and traffic matters for safety too.
See a doctor promptly if
- Hearing dropped suddenly, over hours or a few days, in one or both ears.
- One ear is clearly worse than the other, or hearing is getting worse quickly.
- There is ear pain, discharge or bleeding, dizziness, or new ringing in one ear.
These don’t fit the slow, both-ear pattern of age-related hearing loss, so they need a doctor or an ENT specialist first. Read our guides to sudden hearing loss and hearing loss in one ear.
Step one
The test that measures it
A diagnostic hearing test shows how much hearing has changed, at which pitches and in which ear. At Prism Hearing, Speech and Balance in Viman Nagar it takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and it is completely painless.
Ear examination
Video otoscopy shows the ear canal and eardrum on a screen, so wax or anything else in the way is spotted first.
Pure-tone audiometry (PTA)
Plots the softest sounds you hear at each pitch, in each ear. Age-related loss typically shows as a line sloping down towards the high pitches.
Speech audiometry
Measures how clearly you understand words. It sets realistic expectations and guides the choice and fine-tuning of a hearing aid.
For parents who find travelling hard, we can do the test on a home visit anywhere in Pune. If you then choose a hearing aid with us, your consultation, audiometry and video otoscopy are included free.

Choosing the best hearing aids for seniors
There is no single best hearing aid for seniors. The right one suits the person’s hearing, hands and eyesight, and the way they spend the day. These are the features audiologists typically weigh:
| Feature | What it does | Why it matters with age |
|---|---|---|
| Rechargeable batteries | The aids charge overnight in a small case, with no tiny batteries to change | Easier for stiff fingers, arthritis or weaker eyesight. See rechargeable hearing aids |
| An easy-to-handle style | Behind-the-ear and receiver-in-canal styles sit behind the ear with a thin tube or wire | Simpler to put in, take out and clean than the smallest in-canal models |
| Two hearing aids | Age-related loss usually affects both ears, so a pair is usually fitted | Voices are easier to locate and follow, especially in company |
| Automatic settings | The aids adjust to quiet rooms, conversation and noise on their own | Fewer buttons to remember, with a phone app if family want to help |
| TV and phone streaming | Bluetooth, or a TV accessory, sends sound straight into the aids | The TV no longer has to be loud for everyone. See Bluetooth hearing aids |
We fit the latest hearing aids from globally-leading brands, all six we’re authorised for, so the choice follows the person, not a single manufacturer. Compare every style on our page about hearing aids in Pune.
Choosing wisely
What decides the cost of hearing aids for seniors
It’s usually the first question families ask. The price depends on the technology level, the style, features such as rechargeable batteries and Bluetooth, whether one ear or both need an aid, and what’s included. Technology level matters most, and it should follow the life the aids are for:
Essential
Clear, comfortable sound for quieter routines, mostly at home and in one-to-one conversation.
Standard
Adds noise comfort for family visits and outings. Often enough for a settled routine.
Advanced
Stronger automatic handling of busy rooms, for a full social life of functions, temple visits and group meals.
Premium
The most refined sound in the hardest places, for people who are out and about every day.
With a hearing aid from Prism, the consultation, audiometry, video otoscopy, trial, fitting, fine-tuning and six months of batteries are included free. Your consultation gives the exact options and prices, and a free home trial lets you try them first.
