What happens at an audiology test
Most people start with a standard hearing test. Some also need special tests, and two that people often ask about are the SPIN test and the TDT test. Here is what each one is, in plain words. Which tests you need is for the audiologist to decide, from your history and your first results.
A full audiology test
It usually starts with your history and an ear examination by video otoscopy, followed by pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry and tympanometry. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes, it is painless, and the audiologist explains your audiogram in plain words. Read more about our hearing tests.
The SPIN test in audiology
SPIN stands for speech perception in noise. You repeat words or sentences played against background noise, such as the babble of other voices. It shows how well you follow speech when it is noisy, which a test in a quiet room cannot. Two people with the same audiogram can do very differently in noise, so audiologists may use it when choosing and setting up hearing aids.
The TDT test in audiology
TDT stands for tone decay test. You listen to a steady tone in one ear and signal for as long as you can still hear it. If a tone seems to fade while it is still playing, audiologists call that tone decay. It may be used with other tests when hearing differs between the two ears, and a doctor or ENT specialist decides whether any further checks are needed.
