Hearing Problems, Explained in Plain Words
Most people don’t search for a test name or a hearing aid model. They search for what’s going wrong: “I can’t hear on the phone”, “my ears won’t stop ringing”, “the room spins when I roll over”. These are our guides to those problems, written by the team at our Viman Nagar clinic. Each one explains what the problem usually means, which test answers it, and what happens next.
Some problems can’t wait
Hearing loss that came on suddenly, hearing loss with ear pain, bleeding or discharge, or dizziness with facial drooping, weakness or slurred speech all need a doctor promptly. Start with our guide to sudden hearing loss.
The guides
Start with the problem you recognise
Four guides so far. We publish new ones every month, so this page grows as the library does.
Why can’t I hear in noisy restaurants?
Fine at home, lost at dinner. What that pattern usually means, the test that answers it, and which hearing aid features actually help in noise.
Read the guide Everyday hearingWhy can’t I hear properly on phone calls?
Clear in person but blurred on the phone. Why calls expose a hearing loss first, and how streaming to your hearing aids makes them clear again.
Read the guide Causes and degreeYears of loud noise: has it damaged my hearing?
Work, traffic, machinery or live music over many years. How noise damages hearing, the test that shows it, and how to stop it getting worse.
Read the guide UrgentSuddenly lost hearing in one ear?
Hearing that dropped over hours or days. How to tell it from a blocked ear, why the first days matter most, and what to do today.

Your problem may not have a guide yet
We see far more problems than we have written up. Tinnitus and ear noises, dizziness and vertigo, speech and language concerns in children, the cost and degree of a hearing loss, and the everyday niggles of already wearing hearing aids are all things we handle at the clinic every week.
If yours isn’t here, the quickest route is to describe it in your own words. A short conversation is usually enough to tell which test or appointment makes sense.
